Friday, June 17, 2016 – Stoney Creek, ON: The Canadian Football League Players’ Association is deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of our own.  Fred James, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the CFLPA Pension Fund passed away Wednesday evening in Calgary surrounded by family.

Fred was a CFLPA Player Representative from 1970 to 1975, an executive member in 1975, and First Vice President in 1977.  He became the Benefits Chairman for the Pension and Medical Plans, and he was appointed by the Players’ Association to the Pension Advisory Board.  As Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Fred has been involved in dealing first hand with our members for over 35 years and has been a trusted liaison for not only the active Executive Board but the general population of our membership.

After graduating from the University of Alberta, Fred’s CFL playing career took him to both Calgary and Edmonton where he was part of the 1971 and 1975 Grey Cup Championship teams respectively.

“Fred will be remembered for his incredible commitment and long standing service to our players and Association.  The CFLPA was a passion in Fred’s life and that was evident in the way that he served as Chairman of the Pension Fund.  We have been fortunate to call Fred a Teammate, Friend and Colleague for so many years.” – Jeff Keeping, CFLPA President.

“The Pension Plan Trustees who worked closely with Fred valued his leadership and tireless dedication to all Plan members.” Don Moen – CFLPA Pension Plan Trustee

Fred will be missed by many throughout our League and Association as he has made such a positive impact over his career.

Our condolences go out to Fred’s wife Patti, his children and their families.

Brian Ramsay
CFLPA Executive Director
