Update to Travel Coverage with SSQ Insurance – April 17, 2020

SSQ continues to release information daily on how they are handling the current situation caused by Coronavirus. While there should still be no non-essential travel as per travel advisories issued by national governments, SSQ has now declared that COVID-19 is not considered a sudden and unexpected illness.

  • As a result, for insureds covered by a contract that does not specifically include an exclusion in the event of an epidemic, even though the Canadian government has issued a non-travel advisory, please be advised that if you wish to travel despite this decision, your travel insurance coverage will not cover any costs associated with COVID-19 since it is now considered a foreseeable and expected illness.

SSQ continues to update their FAQ section on their website. Please ensure to consult this FAQ page prior to scheduling any further travel to ensure SSQ has lifted their coverage restrictions: https://ssq.ca/en/coronavirus/specialized-groups

Please continue to check daily for updates regarding this situation as it continues to evolve rapidly.

Update to Travel Coverage with SSQ Insurance – March 27, 2020

SSQ continues to release information daily on how they are handling the current situation caused by Coronavirus. At this point, it is recommended that all non-essential travel should be completely ceased as per travel advisories issued by national governments. Related to these advisories, SSQ has released the following in regards to their travel insurance:

  • You will be covered under your emergency travel insurance if you are currently outside of Canada; this includes trips that were booked after March 13th.
  • You will remain covered under your emergency travel insurance for the duration of your trip provided that it is less than 60 days.
  • Claims related to COVID-19 will be processed as per the provisions of the emergency travel insurance plan.

It is important to know that in regions affected by the coronavirus, local public and governmental health authorities have priority over international assistance services.

CFLPA Medical Plan (Class 1 Players Only) – Update to Travel Coverage with SSQ Insurance – March 26, 2020

SSQ continues to release information daily on how they are handling the current situation caused by Coronavirus. By this point, all non-essential travel should have completely ceased as per travel advisories issued by national governments. Related to these advisories, SSQ has released the following in regards to their travel insurance:

  • If you booked a trip after March 13, trip cancellation and medical expenses will not be reimbursed. This will apply for as long as the travel advisory is in effect, even if the advisory moves from worldwide to regional.

Take note that, regardless of the situation, insureds who are considered essential travellers remain covered by their insurance policy.

If you are travelling outside of Canada and departed prior to March 13, 2020, SSQ has issued the following statement:

  • To be covered by your insurance policy, you must take the necessary measures to return home as quickly as possible.

That way, you will be covered for all medical expenses and emergency medical expenses, whether you are sick from COVID-19, another illness or injured, as long as you make the necessary arrangements to return home by March 27, 2020, at the latest. Refer to your contract as certain exceptions may apply.

In the event that you are unable to return (because the border is closed or no flight is available), the March 27 deadline will no longer apply and you will be covered until your return. Please keep all supporting documents proving that you are unable to return.
