In 17 games (17 starts), Sewell recorded 49 defensive tackles, nine sacks and one special teams tackle. In Week 17 against Saskatchewan, Sewell recorded five defensive tackles, giving him 44 defensive tackles this season (a new career-high). In the Western Semi-Final against Saskatchewan, Sewell recorded three defensive tackles. In the Western Final against Calgary, Sewell recorded two defensive tackles. Sewell was named to the CFLPA All-Star team.
In 15 games, Sewell recorded 39 defensive tackles, eight sacks, one pass knockdown and one fumble recovery. In Week 16 against Saskatchewan he recorded two kickoff returns for 24 yards. Sewell was placed on the one-game injured list in Week 17. Sewell returned to the active roster in Week 18 against BC and recorded four defensive tackles and two sacks. Sewell earned his first career CFLPA all-star award.
In 16 games (10 starts) at defensive tackle, Sewell had 31 defensive tackles (four for losses) and tied for the team-lead with six quarterback sacks. He spent Weeks 6-7 on the injured list. Almondo also played in the Eastern semifinal and had two defensive tackles.
Sewell was on the reserve list for the first game of the season. He was activated for Week 2 and played in three games recording one defensive tackle. He was placed on the 1-game injured list for Week 5 before being released.
Sewell is just the second player in Akron history to be named a three-time All-Mid-American Conference honouree. In four seasons (2007-’09) with the Zips, Sewell registered 223 tackles.
Sewell spent one year at Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy before transferring to Trenton Central High School in Trenton, NJ where he competed in football, baseball and shot put.
