Before joinging the Alouettes' he attended mini camps with the Seattle Seahawks. Games 10 thru 18, East final and the Grey Cup, MacDonald was not able to play due to a knee injury. With the Alouettes' they won the Grey Cup.
Before being traded to Winnipeg by Calgary, he attended mini-camps with the Carolina Panthers.
MacDonald played mainly special teams and was a long snapper for the Stamps, winning a Grey Cup in 2008 with Calgary.
MacDonald dressed in 11 games in his first CFL season. On July 8 against Saskatchewan — his second CFL contest — he recovered a fumble on special teams. Playing sparingly, he did not record another stat until the final game of the season in B.C. where he had a career game, recorded three tackles and a sack. He saw his first CFL post-season action in the West Division semifinal at Saskatchewan.
MacDonald joined the U of A in 2005 as a walk-on and was the team's longsnapper. He played eight games in 2006, recorded 26 tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble and five tackles for a loss. He was the second Golden Bear to sign with an NFL team, the first being former Washington Redskin Brian Fryer.
