The former Lion (2001-06) re-signed with the Lions as a free agent on October 25, 2011 after spending the previous three seasons with the Calgary Stampeders.
Thelwell announced his retirement following the 2010 campaign. Through 159 career games he notched 441 receptions for 6,716 yards and 39 touchdowns.
In his second season with the Stampeders, Thelwell proved his consistency and reliability. He dressed for 17 regular-season games and averaged 17.3 yards per reception, the highest average on the team and the second-best mark of his career. With a 33-yard reception against Saskatchewan on Oct. 1, he topped 6,000 yards receiving for his career. Thelwell converted 78 per cent of his receptions into either first downs or touchdowns. His best game of the season came on Sept. 5 when he hauled in four passes for 65 yards and a major. Thelwell recorded touchdown receptions in back-to-back games against Toronto on Sept. 27 and then against Saskatchewan on Oct. 1. He dressed for both the West Final and Grey Cup.
In his first season with the Stamps, Thelwell caught 40 passes for 733 yards and four touchdowns. He recorded a season-high and career-best 199 yards receiving on seven catches and added two touchdowns against the Edmonton Eskimos on Sept. 3. He added majors against Winnipeg on Oct. 14 and Montreal on Oct. 27. Thelwell averaged 18.3 yards per reception, the highest total of his career.
Finished the season 3rd in B.C. Lions receiving hauling in 53 receptions for 625 yards and four touchdowns…Was a consistent target throughout the season…Recorded his five receptions for 76 yards vs the Edmonton Eskimos…Also had a strong game vs the Stampeders on October 6 recording 65 yards.

Named to the West All-Star Team and ranked third on the Lions with 909 yards on 54 catches for 6 TD. In his college career at Minnesota he recorded 136 receptions and 2,233 receiving yards, with 14 touchdowns. He caught at least one pass in 27 consecutive games for the Golden Gopher and established a school record with 1,051 receiving yards, and was a second team All-Big Ten selection in 1996. That season he was ranked third in his conference and 18th nationally, averaging 95.6 receiving yards per game.
