Calgary drafted Black in the second round (16th overall) of the 2009 CFL Canadian Draft and he signed on May 29, 2009.
In four seasons at Wayne State, Black made 289 tackles, which ranks ninth on the team’s all-time list, and 11 sacks. In his fourth season, he recorded 101 total tackles and four sacks. He was named to the second-team conference squad for his 2008 efforts. Black received the team's Ultimate Warrior award for outstanding work in the weight room. He attended Montreal’s Vanier College before enrolling at Wayne State.
Black attended Central Tech Institute and was a two-time Toronto Star all-city selection. His younger brother Everton is a linebacker for the University of Manitoba Bisons.
