#TeamCFLPA in the Community – Nyles Morgan

For Ottawa RedBlacks linebacker and former Edmonton Elk Nyles Morgan, leadership doesn’t stop when the final whistle blows. While his on-field production has consistently placed him among the CFL’s top defenders, Morgan has built an equally meaningful legacy off the field. One that is rooted in service, mentorship, and creating opportunity for the next generation.

Morgan’s commitment to community is most visible through Destined Athletics, an athletic training program he co-founded to support young athletes striving to compete at the highest levels in football and other sports. Launched in the winter of 2022, Destined Athletics now serves more than 60 youth athletes in Edmonton, spanning multiple age groups, each with tailored training programs focused on skill development, discipline, and long-term growth. The program has established partnerships with local minor football organizations and CJFL teams, creating clear pathways for young athletes to pursue their goals.

Building on that foundation, Morgan also helped develop Future Brights, a non-profit organization under Destined Athletics designed specifically for children aged 7–12. As a board member, Morgan plays a hands-on role in shaping a program centered on leadership development, teamwork, and athletic fundamentals, ensuring that young participants gain confidence and life skills alongside their athletic training.

In 2024, Morgan’s passion for service extended further through the launch of Tackling Homelessness with Destined Athletics, a community initiative aimed at raising awareness and support for Edmonton’s inner-city homelessness crisis. Hosted on April 6, 2024, the event brought together athletes, community members, and partners to contribute clothing and proceeds to the Mustard Seed Foundation, reinforcing Morgan’s belief that athletes have a responsibility to use their platform for positive change.

Beyond organizing events, Morgan regularly gives back through speaking engagements with local high schools, minor football programs, and CJFL teams. Sharing his personal journey and professional experiences, he encourages young athletes to stay focused on their goals regardless of their circumstances.

Morgan’s approach to community involvement mirrors the leadership he brings to the field. A team captain with the Edmonton Elks, he has been a vocal presence in the locker room and a trusted leader within the organization. He has participated in culture building initiatives, helped shape team values, and continued to lead teammates even during periods when injuries kept him sidelined. That same sense of responsibility drives his year-round commitment to Destined Athletics and its community initiatives, often requiring 20–25 hours per week during the season in addition to his professional Football responsibilities.

While Morgan’s on-field résumé includes standout performances and league recognition, he measures success by the impact he has on others. “Life is all about service,” he says. “Using my voice to affect change is a big part of why I work so hard on and off the field.”

Through mentorship, advocacy, and hands-on leadership, Nyles Morgan exemplifies what it means to be a CFLPA member committed to giving back, proving that the most meaningful wins often happen far beyond the playing field.

CFLPA Announces BC Lions’ Andrew Peirson as the Recipient of the 2025 CFLPA Tom Pate Award

The Canadian Football League Players’ Association (CFLPA) is proud to announce that BC Lions offensive lineman Andrew Peirson has been named the winner of the 2025 Tom Pate Award.

Presented annually, the Tom Pate Award is given to the CFL player who best demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship and makes significant contributions to his team, his community, and his association. Peirson’s long-standing commitment to leadership, mentorship, and community service embodies the true spirit of this award.

Over his seven seasons in the CFL, Peirson has built an exceptional record of service both within the game and beyond it. Since joining the league, he has used his platform to speak out on important social issues and create lasting impact across communities in British Columbia and his hometown of Kingston, Ontario.

Peirson has been a dedicated spokesperson for the End Violence Association of BC (EVA BC) since 2019, leading conversations in schools and communities about ending gender-based violence. He has delivered more than 250 school presentations through programs such as Be More Than a Bystander and Team Up to End Racism, empowering young people to take action against discrimination and promote inclusivity.

In addition to his advocacy work, Peirson founded the Heart & Stroke Golf Tournament in Kingston, inspired by his father’s recovery from a stroke in 2008. Now in its 12th  year, the event has raised thousands of dollars and increased awareness about the signs of stroke and the importance of early intervention. He also continues to support HOPE International Development Agency as a fundraiser and recently joined the BC Lions Alumni Association Board of Directors in 2025.

Beyond his community work, Peirson is widely respected for his leadership in the locker room. As a team captain and CFLPA representative, he is known for mentoring younger players, helping them navigate the transition into professional football, and fostering a strong sense of unity within the Lions organization.

“Andrew exemplifies what this award stands for.  Selflessness, leadership, and a genuine commitment to improving the communities around him,” said David Mackie, CFLPA Executive Director, and long time teammate of Peirson’s. “He’s not only a leader for his teammates, but also a role model for youth and communities across Canada.”

Peirson was previously a finalist for the Tom Pate Award in 2024 and was nominated by his peers for the honour in 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2024. His continued commitment to service and leadership has now earned him this prestigious recognition for community involvement.

The CFLPA congratulates Andrew Peirson on being named the 2025 Tom Pate Award recipient and thanks him for his ongoing contributions to the community, the BC Lions, and the Players’ Association.

A Legacy Cemented: Solomon Elimimian’s Number Retired by the BC Lions

This past week, the BC Lions paid tribute to one of the greatest defensive players in Canadian football history, and to our very own CFLPA President, Solomon Elimimian, as they officially announced the retirement of his number 56.

For fans across the CFL, Solomon’s name has long been synonymous with toughness, leadership, and excellence. From the moment he joined the Lions in 2010, he left his mark on the game, establishing himself as a force in the middle of the field. In 2014, Solomon made history by becoming the first defensive player ever to win the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player Award, an achievement that proved just how dominant he was. That same year, he set a league record with 143 tackles in a single season, a record that Solomon himself would break only a few years later with 144 tackles in 2017. Solomon still holds the single season tackles record today.

Over his career, Solomon collected accolades that few players can match: two-time Most Outstanding Defensive Player (2014, 2016), four-time CFL All-Star, a Grey Cup Champion in 2011, and the respect of teammates, opponents, and fans league-wide. His intensity, preparation, and will to win set a standard that lifted everyone around him. Solomon was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame as a first ballot inductee in 2023.

Solomon’s legacy extends well beyond his playing days. In 2020, he was elected President of the CFL Players’ Association, becoming the first former Most Outstanding Player to lead the union. Just as he did on the field, Solomon brought energy, vision, and determination to the role. Under his leadership, the CFLPA has strengthened its voice, negotiated a historic collective bargaining agreement, and expanded opportunities for players through programs like the CFLPA Academy, helping members prepare for life after football.

For the CFLPA, seeing Solomon’s number retired isn’t just about remembering his remarkable playing career, it’s about celebrating the full scope of his contribution to the game. From racking up tackles at BC Place to advocating for players at the bargaining table, he has dedicated his life to building a stronger future for Canadian football.

Congratulations, Solomon. Your number may no longer be worn on the field in BC, but your impact will be felt in locker rooms, boardrooms, and communities across the CFL for years to come.
