CFLPA Announces BC Lions’ Andrew Peirson as the Recipient of the 2025 CFLPA Tom Pate Award

The Canadian Football League Players’ Association (CFLPA) is proud to announce that BC Lions offensive lineman Andrew Peirson has been named the winner of the 2025 Tom Pate Award.

Presented annually, the Tom Pate Award is given to the CFL player who best demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship and makes significant contributions to his team, his community, and his association. Peirson’s long-standing commitment to leadership, mentorship, and community service embodies the true spirit of this award.

Over his seven seasons in the CFL, Peirson has built an exceptional record of service both within the game and beyond it. Since joining the league, he has used his platform to speak out on important social issues and create lasting impact across communities in British Columbia and his hometown of Kingston, Ontario.

Peirson has been a dedicated spokesperson for the End Violence Association of BC (EVA BC) since 2019, leading conversations in schools and communities about ending gender-based violence. He has delivered more than 250 school presentations through programs such as Be More Than a Bystander and Team Up to End Racism, empowering young people to take action against discrimination and promote inclusivity.

In addition to his advocacy work, Peirson founded the Heart & Stroke Golf Tournament in Kingston, inspired by his father’s recovery from a stroke in 2008. Now in its 12th  year, the event has raised thousands of dollars and increased awareness about the signs of stroke and the importance of early intervention. He also continues to support HOPE International Development Agency as a fundraiser and recently joined the BC Lions Alumni Association Board of Directors in 2025.

Beyond his community work, Peirson is widely respected for his leadership in the locker room. As a team captain and CFLPA representative, he is known for mentoring younger players, helping them navigate the transition into professional football, and fostering a strong sense of unity within the Lions organization.

“Andrew exemplifies what this award stands for.  Selflessness, leadership, and a genuine commitment to improving the communities around him,” said David Mackie, CFLPA Executive Director, and long time teammate of Peirson’s. “He’s not only a leader for his teammates, but also a role model for youth and communities across Canada.”

Peirson was previously a finalist for the Tom Pate Award in 2024 and was nominated by his peers for the honour in 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2024. His continued commitment to service and leadership has now earned him this prestigious recognition for community involvement.

The CFLPA congratulates Andrew Peirson on being named the 2025 Tom Pate Award recipient and thanks him for his ongoing contributions to the community, the BC Lions, and the Players’ Association.

A Legacy Cemented: Solomon Elimimian’s Number Retired by the BC Lions

This past week, the BC Lions paid tribute to one of the greatest defensive players in Canadian football history, and to our very own CFLPA President, Solomon Elimimian, as they officially announced the retirement of his number 56.

For fans across the CFL, Solomon’s name has long been synonymous with toughness, leadership, and excellence. From the moment he joined the Lions in 2010, he left his mark on the game, establishing himself as a force in the middle of the field. In 2014, Solomon made history by becoming the first defensive player ever to win the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player Award, an achievement that proved just how dominant he was. That same year, he set a league record with 143 tackles in a single season, a record that Solomon himself would break only a few years later with 144 tackles in 2017. Solomon still holds the single season tackles record today.

Over his career, Solomon collected accolades that few players can match: two-time Most Outstanding Defensive Player (2014, 2016), four-time CFL All-Star, a Grey Cup Champion in 2011, and the respect of teammates, opponents, and fans league-wide. His intensity, preparation, and will to win set a standard that lifted everyone around him. Solomon was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame as a first ballot inductee in 2023.

Solomon’s legacy extends well beyond his playing days. In 2020, he was elected President of the CFL Players’ Association, becoming the first former Most Outstanding Player to lead the union. Just as he did on the field, Solomon brought energy, vision, and determination to the role. Under his leadership, the CFLPA has strengthened its voice, negotiated a historic collective bargaining agreement, and expanded opportunities for players through programs like the CFLPA Academy, helping members prepare for life after football.

For the CFLPA, seeing Solomon’s number retired isn’t just about remembering his remarkable playing career, it’s about celebrating the full scope of his contribution to the game. From racking up tackles at BC Place to advocating for players at the bargaining table, he has dedicated his life to building a stronger future for Canadian football.

Congratulations, Solomon. Your number may no longer be worn on the field in BC, but your impact will be felt in locker rooms, boardrooms, and communities across the CFL for years to come.

CFLPA ANNOUNCES ADAM BIGHILL AS THE RECIPIENT OF THE 2024 TOM PATE AWARD

(Vancouver, BC) -  At each Grey Cup, the Canadian Football League Players’ Association has the honour of presenting the Tom Pate Award.  It is an award presented not just for one’s ability to perform on the field, but rather it is an award given to a player who also displays qualities that distinguish them from their peers off the field as well.

The CFLPA is proud to announce Adam Bighill from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as the 2024 Tom Pate Award recipient. Throughout his years in Winnipeg, Adam’s dedication goes far beyond the field, dedicating his time within the Winnipeg community.  As the President of Making Faces, he inspires confidence and resilience in young people facing facial differences, guiding them to embrace their uniqueness with strength. He also shares his passion for football and youth development through Recruit Ready, where he coaches varsity and youth athletes, participates in fundraisers, and lends his expertise in board meetings. In addition, Adam contributes his time to Football Manitoba, coaching flag football, and supports the Manitoba Minor Football Association, helping to nurture the next generation of football talent. His commitment to giving back is a shining example of leadership, and we are thrilled to recognize him for his incredible impact.

Tom Pate had a unique combination of outstanding sportsmanship, dedication and sense of community.  He was educated at the University of Nebraska where he majored in business administration while playing for the Cornhuskers.   He joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 1975 and as a rookie played 14 regular season games.  In October 1975, his life was abruptly ended, when in his fourteenth game against the Stampeders in Calgary, he suffered an aneurysm in the fourth quarter.  Pate, only 23 at the time, never regained consciousness and passed away just two days later.

Each year, the current CFLPA membership across the league select a teammate to be nominated for this award and represent their respective team.  The recipient embodies the qualities that distinguished Tom Pate; qualities that recognize a Player with outstanding sportsmanship, a Player who has made a contribution to his team as well as to his community and to his Association.  From the 9 Team nominees, one individual member is selected to receive the honour of being awarded the Tom Pate Award for that season.
